"Collect race number on the day." Frieth is a village in the Chilterns about 5M W of Marlow. The 10K involves sections on road, trails and footpaths through woods and fields, including challenging off-road descents and ascents. There's one point where the route that comes out of a wood to go along the side of a field throws you down from about 160m to 90m during the course of 0.5K. Then, after a flat section along lanes through Fingest and Skirmett, there's the inevitable long hard climb. Although, unlike the descent, the ascent doesn't all come at once, it's still hard work. In about 0.3K you go from about 80m to 110m. The path then flattens out for a bit (in Hatchet Wood) before there is another push. In all, you go from about 80m to 160m in about 2K. Although the rest of the route is mainly undulating, there is the final sting: the last 0.5K is a climb from about 140m to 175m to get back up to Frieth. Even though it's tough, I love this route, and Autumn is a good time to visit the area as the Chiltern Hills are gorgeous at this time of year. There is a 5K as well as the 10K. "The 5K is certainly a flatter route, and was enjoyed by many school/junior club runners last year. It is an ideal first 5K race, or for those that are not quite brave enough to take on the challenge of the 10K hills just yet." Off road newbies will also find it a great introduction to multi terrain running as it includes a variety of surfaces with quiet paths, tracks, byways and some minor lanes in rural North Wiltshire. The undulating and varied route is generally firm underfoot in September although a wet summer could make some sections interestingly muddy, as it did in 2017! But there are also some fast sections and in dry conditions such as last year when a new course record was set, very fast times are possible."

"The route starts by you running out on the minor C15, Compton Bassett road towards [a hamlet called] Highway. At circa 0.8M you will leave this road and turn right to begin the next section of the route: the 'Highway Loop'. This loop is a quiet unclassified country road that is, most importantly, nice and level to ensure that you settle into your rhythm for the next couple of miles. As you reach half distance you will rejoin the C15, Compton Bassett road, albeit further up than when you initially left it. The route then continues along this road, turning left again at circa 3.2M to continue along this road until at just over 4 miles where you will bear right to remain on the road that you left it earlier to begin the final mile back to the Hall." This Facebook post says there are no entries on the day.
The race is moving from a Saturday evening to a Sunday morning. "This race is normally held annually at Hornton village which is 6M NW of Banbury." The start/finish is at the Village Green which means there is about a 350m long gentle rise before the first steep hill. There is then a gentle down followed by a not-so-gentle up. It's then flat for a short while before a big dip. This flattish bit starts at 2K and lasts for about 3K - if it's been raining a lot recently, there'll be a point where you'll have to run through very shallow water that stretches from one side of the road to the other! At 3M, it's steep down into Horley but that is immediately followed by a long gentle climb through and out of the village. From 4M, it's reasonably flat for about 1.5M. The race ends with 0.5K fast down hill back to the Village Green. The race takes place on a "virtually traffic-free course." "Following a review of the course, and taking into account feedback from last year’s race, we’re pleased to announce some improvements to the route. The changes remove a narrow footpath and the section over Speen Moors which has suffered water damage causing the path to become rough and unstable. A replacement section along Enborne Road has been added to make up the distance." "The race starts and finishes in a vibrant atmosphere at the centre of the idyllic market town." "There is a gentle climb for the first 3K, followed by a short descent and the rest of the course is flat. Approximately 7K of the course is on road, with the remainder taking place on footpaths in the beautiful surrounding countryside and along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal which passes through the town centre." "From the field in front of the pavilion, all runners head toward the centre of Dymock. Runners swing South out of the village through small country lanes, until reaching the M50 bridge at Four Oaks, where the Half heads left and the 5M turns right towards Dymock Woods. A quick detour for the Half around Holder's lane deposits us on the Kempley road heading North into Queen's Wood (the epicentre of the famous Daffodil Walk) and into the pretty village of Kempley. Once through Kempley, turning at Kempley New Church, the route tends North on a gradual incline towards Much Marcle, before doubling back past Kempley Old Church and the historic Memorial Oak. A climb to Candle Cottage on the edge of Kempley at the 10M mark, leads to an eastward turn for the final few miles back to Dymock and over the old railway bridge, before a descent back to the cricket club. For the 5M, following the right turn just before the Motorway bridge, runners follow the undulating road through Dymock woods. The route continues on the lane towards Normansland and a pair of fast straights to Dymock. Then the final part takes runners over the old railway bridge, past the Beauchamps Arms and a return to the cricket club." "Both courses are suitable for runners of all abilities." "Chip timing." Here are my notes from when I ran it a few years ago: 'this 5M is on rural roads in/near the outskirts of Banbury - there is a shortcut behind the school across its playing fields to the start - the start is in Browning Road which is in a housing estate off Bloxham Road - at the 1M marker, there is a slight hill - there is a big hill before the 3M marker and a slight dip at 3.6M - it is flat from 4M onwards and there is a slight decline to the finish which is near to where Bloxham Road joins Queensway.' This course map is useful as it not only has the route of the race (marked in red) but it also has the shortcut from the Race HQ to the start (marked in blue) and the route from the finish back to the Race HQ (marked in green)'.

'This is a gorgeous run that takes place around Houghton which is a village in the Test valley that is about halfway between Salisbury and Winchester. It's mainly off-road: it starts with a long gentle climb along a rutted cart track; then down along rough tarmac; uses a footbridge to bypass a ford (or you can run through!); then there is a narrow footpath that climbs gently up through a wood (where you are warned to watch out for tree roots). The rest of the course is either flat or downhill, again on rough tarmac, on wide bridleways/cart-tracks or on grassy footpaths through fields where there are two stiles. The route also passes a bluebell wood, a magnificently preserved disused railway station and several bridges across the River Test.' "As well as the 11K, there are also a canicross 11K, a 4K fun run and 32K and 14K mountain bike rides."
