There was a lot of mud, especially in the woods. In 2010, most people near to me walked the two killer hills: one hill is at 4K; the other is at the start of the last 1K. I enjoyed the race. Here are my notes from when I did this race in 2009 - firstly I found myself parked some way away from the Race HQ - there were many marshals in the town assisted with the parking - the organisers had described the race as a "challenging and undulating scenic route over quiet country lanes through the Chiltern Hills" - meaning that the first 2K is all uphill, and that there are four other uphills at 3K, 5K, 13K and 17.5K - I reckon the last hill climbs from about 53m to 93m and that you do the steepest 25m in about 160m - that's about 1 in 7! - it's tough after you've been running for more than 17K - if (like me) you walk up the hill, you've got some stunning scenery to admire! - of course every uphill has a downhill - and having climbed for 2K at the start, you are rewarded with a 2K downhill finish - I enjoyed the race! |

The 10K involves sections on road, trails and footpaths through woods and fields, including challenging off-road descents and ascents. There's one point where the route that comes out of a wood to go along the side of a field throws you down from about 160m to 90m during the course of 0.5K. Then, after a flat section along lanes through Fingest and Skirmett, there is the inevitable long hard climb. Although, unlike the descent, the ascent doesn't all come at once, it's hard work. In about 0.3K you go from about 80m to 110m. The path then flattens out for a bit (in Hatchet Wood) before there is another push. In all, you go from about 80m to 160m in about 2K. Although the rest of the route is mainly undulating, there is the final sting: the last 0.5K is a climb from about 140m to 175m to get back up to Frieth. Even though it's tough, I love this route, and Autumn is a good time to visit the area as the Chiltern Hills are gorgeous at this time of year. There is a 5K event as well as the 10K. "We offer a creche with qualified childcare professionals, teas, BBQ, massages and children's activities to make this a great day out for the whole family." |

Once you exit the woods, you'll run in a straight line through farmland before turning left just before North Farm, and running around a field boundary until you hit the River Thames. Follow the meandering river for just under a kilometre, then it's back through the farmland and past North Farm, through Little Wittenham Woods and down to Church Meadows. From here it's an uphill climb to the peak of Round Hill (one of the two famous Wittenham Clumps). Run back down to the bottom before beginning to run up the second Clump - Castle Hill. Once you've run around the top of the hill you can begin the sprint to the finish line, heading downhill and onto the home straight!" |

This is advertised as "a tough 10 mile one lap road race in the picturesque Cotswold countryside". I definitely think it lives up to that description, as one of its features is an endlessly long but gentle climb of about 90m, the gentle hill lasting for 4K from Crawley to Leafield. Elsewhere on this course, there are a lot of sharp descents and ascents. So I think it is quite a challenge. The race takes place on pretty country lanes and roads where there is little traffic. In 2014, the 10M can also be run as a Relay: "Grab a couple of friends! Teams of three can share the achievement of competing in the first ever relay in this inaugural Cotswold Classic Festival of Running. The relay will follow the same scenic route as the Cotswold Classic 10 mile road race with each team member completing a 3 to 3.5 mile leg." "Mementos including technical t-shirt and neck buff." When I did the race in 2011, these paths were strewn with leaves and some conkers. "The course consists of one large lap and one smaller lap and is undulating with several short sharp hills." The only bit you do twice is the last 3K which is great as it means that from 7K onwards you know what's going to happen and can easily pace the rest of the race. I've seen this photo of one of the hills - this is a hill that you do twice - the photo shows a sign alongside the path that says you should give way to aircraft! Before the 2011 race, a runner from Charlbury explained to me that the owner (Lord Rotherwick) uses one of the paths as a landing strip. His wife (Lady Tania Rotherwick) was the third woman to finish that day. And as well as conkers, I also saw two peacocks and a large collection of deer. I saw these in my warming-up: needless to say they'd gone by the time I reached them in the race! "Childrens 1 mile fun run as well." |

The Hornton 6 is described as a "virtually traffic-free course over a scenic and undulating race route". The start/finish is at the Village Green which means there is about a 350m long gentle rise before the first steep hill. There is then another gentle down followed by a not-so-gentle up. It's then flat for a short while before a big dip. This flattish bit starts at 2K and lasts for about 3K. At 3M, it's steep down into Horley but that is immediately followed by a long gentle climb through and out of Horley. From 4M, it's reasonably flat for about 1.5M. The race ends with 0.5K down hill back to the Village Green. "Drinks and refreshments are available after the race. For the last few years there has also been free over-night camping where everyone is welcome to stay, but please bear in mind that there are limited facilities. We also hold a 'Bring your own Burger' BBQ" after the race. |

Here's a useful description from a newsletter of the Tring Running Club: "The start and finish is in Little Gaddesden and the route goes down the Golden Valley behind Ashridge house, up onto the ridge behind Frithsden, down the roman road track to Nettleden before climbing up the path on the other side of the valley to the monastery. There is then a couple of kilometres on a flat track to Hudnall before turning back across rutted fields to Little Gaddesden. So if you are familiar with the Boundary Trail or the Dunstable 20, you would know a lot of this route. | | This is a gorgeous run that takes place around Houghton which is a village in the Test valley that is about halfway between Salisbury and Winchester. "Postal entrants should report to the registration desk on arrival to check in and collect their race number as part of our new safety measures." The course is mainly off-road: it starts with a long gentle climb along a rutted cart track; then down along rough tarmac; uses a footbridge to bypass a ford; then there is a narrow footpath that climbs gently up through a wood (where you are warned to watch out for tree roots). The rest of the course is either flat or downhill, again on rough tarmac, on wide bridleways/cart-tracks or on grassy footpaths through fields where there are two stiles. The route also passes a bluebell wood, a magnificently preserved disused railway station and several bridges across the River Test. "The run joins the Test Way around 8/9Km and The Clarendon Way at around 10Km." "Drink stations are set up at 5Km and 9Km." "The route is marked with black on yellow arrows." "Being a little longer than the standard 10K run, the race attracts middle and long distance runners as well as fun runners and walkers." The Goring 10K takes place on undulating rural lanes and footpaths but there are also three or four hills. The race starts at the bottom of a hill outside Goring's Fire Station. The hill climbs from 60m to 95m and lasts about 1K. The race then uses country lanes, 1.5K of the Ridgeway through South Stoke, more country lanes to re-visit the highest point of the course about 1.5K from the end. So you then go down the 1K hill you did at the start but this is then followed by a few meanderings around a housing estate before finishing on a field behind the School. Tip: if you're wishing to finish fast but are tired at the end of the race, these meanderings can be a bit confusing. The last 0.5K are worth checking out when you warmup before the start. | | "The THR is a popular running relay race held every year in the heart of Oxford. The race begins from the famous Iffley Road track where Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute barrier (Jackdaw Lane, Iffley Road, Oxford). Each leg of the relay is 3.6 miles and the race is open to Men's teams (4 runners), Women's teams (3 runners) and Mixed teams (2 men, 2 ladies per team). Every year THR draws a large attendance from both serious runners and those out to keep fit and have fun. In addition to outside University and club teams, the day traditionally sees a large number of entrants from internal college/department/sports clubs and we welcome runners of all abilities competing on the day!" The route starts on the Iffley Track, uses side roads to get to Donnington Bridge, along the towpath to Folly Bridge, uses the Broad Walk through Christ Church Meadows, goes along Rose Lane, across Magdalen Bridge and along Iffley Road back to the Track. There are details on Banbury's web site of what you should do if you are a 'deferred entrant'. The course first runs along narrow paths through Spiceball Park and then on a footpath that accompanies the A423. The first hill is alongside this main road at about 1.25M. Just after 2M, the course leaves the main road and ventures into the countryside visiting the villages of Little Bourton, Great Bourton, Cropredy and Claydon. The course is a shaped like a letter P: the out and back bit is about 5M long and so, at 5M, the circular 5M bit of the P starts. Here there is a short hill and at 6M there is a longer hill. In my opinion, the nicest part of the course is between 6.5M and 8M: so peaceful on a quiet, narrow lane that crosses the Oxford Canal (between Claydon and Appletree). Unfortunately, this tranquillity is shattered by a significant hill at 8M (and possibly in the future by being only 1K from 225 mph trains on the proposed HS2 railway line). You then complete the circular bit of the course. Just after 11M you meet the last hill which is on the approach to Great Bourton. You know it's coming as you went down it on the way out! The race consists of two laps around the centre of Bourton followed by an out-and-back section along the road that goes towards Great Rissington and then another 1.75 laps around the centre. In 2011, it was well marshalled; and as usual there was a lot of crowd support in Bourton and a lot of runner camaraderie during the middle of the course along the out-and-back section. |

It leaves Winslow and passes Verney Junction, Sandhills then East Claydon and returns via the Granborough Road to Winslow. (With a bit of a climb to finish, so keep something back!)" "T-shirt." A map of the route shows the course varying from about 85m to 113m. When I ran it in 2010 I found a long gentle incline lasting from 3.5K to 5K and another short one at 5.5K. But the cruel bit was at the end: there was a steep hill from 9K to 9.5K. Needless to say this is where the official photographer was positioned to catch all the grimaces. |

| | This 10K is on country lanes in the Chilterns. It starts from the village green in Woodcote, runs down hill along lanes through woods to Goring. At 5K, it goes up the killer hill that is outside Goring's Fire Station, the same hill that is used for the start of the Goring 10K. There is then a 1K respite but this is followed by a long climb back to Woodcote. Elsewhere on the web, someone says it's a "tough road race, 5K downhill followed by 5K uphill" and that describes it very well. |
