As very few races are taking place at the moment, I'm creating some web pages entitled "where I was taking photos this time last year". Today, I'm looking at the Frieth Hilly 10K which takes place from Frieth, a village in the Chilterns that is about 5M west of Marlow.
The organiser's website is at friethhilly.co.uk but it's currently unavailable. It says "the Frieth Hilly is known for the warmth of its welcome (and its hills) - the whole school and villagers turn out to cheer on the runners." There are two races: a 5K and a 10K but because there are youngsters doing the 5K I only take photos of the 10K.
The 10K involves sections on road, trails and footpaths through woods and fields, including challenging off-road descents and ascents. There's one point where the route that comes out of a wood to go along the side of a field throws you down from about 160m to 90m during the course of 0.5K. Then, after a flat section along lanes through Fingest and Skirmett, there's the inevitable long hard climb. Although, unlike the descent, the ascent doesn't all come at once, it's still hard work. In about 0.3K you go from about 80m to 110m. The path then flattens out for a bit (in Hatchet Wood) before there is another push. In all, you go from about 80m to 160m in about 2K. Although the rest of the route is mainly undulating, there is the final sting: the last 0.5K is a climb from about 140m to 175m to get back up to Frieth. And you have to do this climb (when you're exhausted) in front of the villagers and supporters! You can see the descent and the ascents in the elevation profile that is given below. Even though it's tough, I love this route, and Autumn is a good time to visit the area as the Chilterns landscape is gorgeous at this time of year.
Last year's race took place on Sun Oct 20th 2019 and this year's race was to have taken place today (Sun Oct 18th 2020). Unfortunately, because of Covid-19 it has had to be cancelled.
By the way, you can click on any of the photos on this web page to see the photo in hi-res.

If you did the Frieth Hilly 10K in 2019 and want a reminder, then here's a link to all the photos that I took. There's a calculator on that web page that makes it easy to find the photos of a runner given their time and you can find the time from this results web page.
If you want to see the reviews I've done on other races, then here's a link to a web page that includes an index of the reviews of races.
I maintain a web page for runners that provides a list of races near Oxfordshire and the latest results. As well as a lot of postponed/cancelled races(!), it is now includes several races that plan to abide by the Covid-19 regulations. So go and visit www.oxonraces.com to see what races may take place. And if you use twitter, you may want to follow @oxonraces to become aware of important changes to this web page.
This web page is at www.oxonraces.com/blog/2020-10-18-frieth. It was created on October 11th 2020 and last updated on October 18th 2020.
