As races are not taking place at the moment, I'm creating some web pages entitled "where I was taking photos this time last year". Today, I'm looking at the Run Wytham Woods 10K which takes place in Wytham Woods which is about 3.5M West of Oxford.
The organiser's website says "On a hill, in ancient Wytham Great Wood, ringed by the river Thames, overlooking Oxford’s spires, we bring you serenity, beauty and challenge, our second RunWythamWoods. Usually RunWythamWoods is the second Sunday in June, but for obvious reasons, we have moved the race this year to the new date of Sun Oct 25th 2020, the woods are beautiful in the Autumn as the leaves turn." Last year's race took place on Sun Jun 9th 2019.
By the way, you can click on any of the photos on this web page to see the photo in hi-res.
Wytham Woods has a
website.
It says
"Wytham Woods is an ancient semi-natural woodland,
which has been owned and maintained by the University of Oxford since 1942.
Its 1000 acres are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest
and are one of the most researched pieces of woodland in the world, exceptionally rich in flora and fauna,
with over 500 species of plants, a wealth of woodland habitats,
and 800 species of butterflies and moths.
The ancient woods date back to the last Ice Age,
while the secondary woodland dates to the seventeenth century
and the plantations to the 1950s and 1960s.
The Woods are enjoyed by walkers, wildlife enthusiasts, and school children,
and used by researchers both from the University and around the world
for wildlife and environmental research.
We have a wealth of long term biological data, with bird data dating back for over 60 years,
badger data for over 30 years and climate change data for the last 18 years.
Current research projects are investigating subjects including climate change, blue and great tits,
badgers, bats and small mammals."
There's a web page about the tit project.
It says "How individual tits interact with one another is likely to have important consequences for their lives.
Through tracking the activity and movements of thousands of individual birds in Wytham,
we can monitor the social interactions within winter feeding flocks.
We do this using a grid of bird feeders, which are placed across the woods
and open for two days every week.
Each feeder has RFID tag readers that detect every tagged bird that comes to feed.
This gives a snapshot of who is feeding with whom,
allowing us to test how individuals differ in their social behaviour,
who they form strong social bonds with, and how the environment shapes their societies."
When I walked through the Woods in February 2019, I came across this researcher.
He was ringing some of the tits.
Before showing you photos of some runners who did well in last year's Run Wytham Woods 10K,
I'll first show a map of the race route
and then some photos taken along the route.
The above image shows the race routes of both the 10K and the 1M Fun Run.
The contours on that map show that ...
... some hills are involved!
The above images are taken from organiser's website.
In February 2019, I did a recce of part of the race route.
Here are some of the photos I took.
Before the inaugural race some runners did a recce of the route.
Here's a video of their recce.
And here's a

If you did the Run Wytham Woods 10K in 2019 and want a reminder, then here's a link to all the photos that I took. There's a calculator on that web page that makes it easy to find the photos of a runner given their time and you can find the time from the results web page.
If you want to see the reviews I've done on other races, then here's a link to a web page that includes an index of the reviews of races.
I'm planning for my next review to be of the 2019 Kingham 10K. I plan to post that review on Saturday June 20th 2020.
I maintain a web page for runners that provides a list of races near Oxfordshire and the latest results. Visit www.oxonraces.com and follow @oxonraces
This web page is at www.oxonraces.com/blog/2020-06-14-wytham-oxford. It was created on June 7th 2020 and last updated on June 14th 2020.
