2019 Chieveley Chase

Happy Easter! I don't usually take photos of races at Easter because I'm usually away for the Easter weeks. With a crowded diary for the weeks ahead in 2019, this Sunday (and next Sunday), in my series entitled "where I was taking photos this time last year", I'll take one of the races out of order and see who did well at that race in 2019. Also, this Sunday and on the next two Sundays I'll be covering races not far away from Oxford that are not usually attended by many Oxfordshire club runners. This will be followed on May 3rd by an account of last year's Mota-vation race at Charlton-on-Otmoor. Well, that's the plan.

This week I'll be looking at the 2019 Chieveley Chase. Chieveley is a village in Berkshire that is about 3.5M North of Newbury. It's about 26M from Oxford. I guess it's most known for giving its name to the Services at the junction of the A34 and the M4. It's also close to where the Oxfordshire XC League sometimes hold XC races at Newbury Showground.

The Chieveley Chase is a "stunningly beautful 5.7M multi-terrain single lap race that starts and finishes at Chieveley Village Hall". Here's a link to the web page for the race. The race is one of the four races of the Run West Berks Series. Last year's Chieveley Chase took place on Sat May 11th. They had planned for it to take place this year on Sun May 3rd but that has been cancelled - it may be arranged for later in the year. I've taken photos at this race in each of the last five years, i.e., in each of the years 2015-19. Probably the reasons I like taking photos at the race are that it's low-key and it's mainly off-road - so I can get out into the peace of the countryside.

By the way, you can click on any of the photos on this web page to see the photo in hi-res.

The route of the race

map of the race route
The above map shows the route of the race. It's run in a clockwise direction starting/finishing in the village of Chieveley which is on the right-hand side of the map. Apart from the sections near the start and finish that use the main road through Chieveley, the route uses footpaths and tracks alongside fields.

During my visits to Chieveley, I've taken some photos of the route at 5 places that are near to where I've taken photos of the runners. They'll give you a bit of a clue as to the terrain. Here they are:

Photos of Oxfordshire club runners

I only saw one runner from an Oxfordshire club: Lisa O'Neill from White Horse Harriers. She did well finishing as the 3rd female. I guess there may have been others from Oxfordshire clubs who were "incognito".

David Cahill (406, unattached) was the 1st 90 year old runner! He finished in a time of 87.47.
Be impressed as there was a 90 year old doing the race. I've seen David Cahill (406, unattached) in each of the 5 years that I've been taking photos at this race. Above, there are photos of David at 1.08M, at 4.65M and at the finish. As these photos show, he's always surrounded by his family.

Footnotes

If you did the race and want a reminder, then here's a link to all the photos that I took. There's a calculator on that web page that makes it easy to find the photos of a runner given their time and you can find the time from the results.

If you want to see the reviews I've done on other 2019 races, then here's a link to a web page that includes an index of the reviews of 2019 races. Like this week, next week I'm planning to take a look at another race from 2019 out of order. It'll be the Commonweal 5. This is a multi-terrain race in Swindon. "Starting (and finishing) on the school playing field, the route descends along paths from the Old Town onto the Old Town Railway Path, to a flat middle section along by the Waitrose supermarket and the lakes and canal at Wichelstowe. But this scenic course has a sting in its tail...! because the final section of the route involves a steady climb back up to Old Town."
