2019 Treehouse 10K

This Sunday, I'm starting a series which I've entitled "where I was taking photos this time last year". And the first race I'm going to look at is the Treehouse 10K. This is a multi-terrain 10K from Cholsey. There is also a 5K but I took no photos of the 5K. There are details about the event at: treehouse10k.org.uk And the results are at: my3.raceresult.com/121401/?lang=en.

It was an eventful day for me. Let me explain. This was the 4th time I'd taken photos at this event. I normally take photos of the race at 1.6K and at 9K. The 5K share bits of the route of the 10K and as I don't want to take photos of the 5K because there are youngsters doing that I took photos of the 10K at about 1.6K and at 9K. The 1.6K point is just after the 5K splits away from the 10K. In previous years, I park near this junction. The 5K sets off a few minutes after the 10K but the front runners of the 5K catch up the tail runners of the 10K. So when the last 10K runner has passed the 1.6K I jump in my car to go off to the 9K point. However, this has me driving against some of the 5K runners for a short distance on a narrow lane. So in 2019 to avoid this conflict, I parked my car on a grass verge away from the route of the runners. Needless to say, not seeing a ditch I grounded my car! I would need a recovery vehicle to pull the car out. This was about 20 minutes before the 10K runners got to 1.6K. What to do? Carry on with the show!! So I took photos of the 10K as they passed 1.6K. And when the last runner had passed I then had the problem of getting to 9K. I chatted to a local resident who happened to be passing in his car and he gave me a lift that took me almost there. I just had to walk about 0.5K to the 9K point. After all the runners had passed me at 9K, I then had to get back to my car. I chatted to a marshal who was marshalling near to 9K. He gave me a lift back to the Race HQ where I had put up some signs about red crosses earlier in the day. I retrieved these and happened to bump into the marshal again and he gave me a lift back to my car. I then rang my insurance company. I told them that I was on Wallingford Road about a mile from Cholsey. About 30 minutes later the recovery people rang me. They were coming from London. I'd been misunderstood - the insurance people had thought I had said "Chelsea". Eventually some tow people from Benson turned up and pulled my car out of the grass verge without damaging the underside. Phew! I'm extremely grateful to the local resident who gave me a lift from 1.6K to 9K and to the marshal who ferried me around after the race.

Mike Suggate (222, Didcot Runners) was 1st finishing in a chiptime of 36:12. Here he is at 9K. By the way, you can click on any of the photos to see the photo in hi-res.

If you did the race and want a reminder, then here's a link to all the photos I took at the 2019 Treehouse 10K.

They were going to adopt new routes for the 10k and 5K in 2020 and these would be almost all off-road. And neither of the spots I normally go to (at 1.6K and 9K) are on the new route of the 10K. The 10K's new route goes from Cholsey along public rights of way alongside fields or diagonally across them. It goes past Lollington Hill to get to the village of Aston Tirrold where it passes the Church of St Michael. It then uses more public rights of way around fields to get back to Cholsey. It's fairly flat. The organisers have produced a web page showing the new routes of the 10K and 5K. That web page also has videos of Sam Amend (one of the race organisers) doing the route.

If you want to see the reviews I've done on other 2019 races, then here's a link to a web page that includes an index of the reviews of 2019 races.
